…because that’s where all the magic happens!
I have read this quote somewhere when I was about 18 years old and it has never left me ever since.
So why should you always look for ways to step out of your comfort zone? Let me give you an example.
Annabelle is a clerk at a well-known company. She is very happy with her job, her pay and her general environment. She has a great team within the department, her tasks at work are always routine – for which she has a perfect system to work through by now to reduce any chances of error, she knows exactly how long each task requires and has her typical workday planned out to the minute. After work she goes off to a spin class, to get back home just in time to have a pleasant dinner with her boyfriend at their cosy home where they had brief exchanges about their day. One day, Annabelle comes to work to find that two other clerks called in sick and a third one is away on a workshop for the week. She was now asked to take on a few more tasks, outside of her responsibilities to meet the department’s deadline. Her first thought was panic – there were too many unknowns that came with these new tasks. But she had no other choice, so she took a deep breath and decided to complete her tasks one step at a time.
By the end of the week, she had all the unknowns figured out, she was able to complete all the tasks and make the department’s deadlines a day ahead of schedule. Along the way, she also had a chance to meet other co-workers from different departments, one of whom was very impressed by her work. This senior colleague asked her if Annabelle would be interested in working with her on a new project that would at a regional level. Annabelle, after realizing how much she enjoyed such an unexpected challenge, accepted the offer. This offer came with a pay raise, exciting business trips and many collaboration opportunities with external partners. Annabelle was now not only able to afford a bigger apartment, but she and her boyfriend decided to move to the outskirts of the city where there were a lot of trails for mountain biking. This allowed them to go biking every weekend - something they always wanted to do, but never managed to make the time for it.
All this was made possible for Annabelle because when she was pushed out of her comfort zone, she decided to face this instead of walking away to remain comfortable. What happened to Annabelle was by chance. But there are several ways you can consciously push yourself out of the comfort zone. There are simple ways you can do this such as going to a restaurant to eat alone, walking to work once a week, or trying new cuisines. There are also daring ways you can do this such as skydiving, going on a trip by yourself, or complimenting a stranger. It’s up to you what you do, but each time you will find yourself feeling a little more empowered, you will feel good about yourself and most importantly you will have experiences that will teach you a great many things about life and thus, transform you into a better version of yourself.
So always try and step out of your comfort zone, because that’s where all the magic happens!
